Science, Engineering and Technology

Fast developing and advanced countries of the world depend on Science,Engineering and Technology.

Nigeria as a country is backwards as per say, but there is a bright hope,on record there are series of youths training in Science, Engineering and Technology. In the likes of scholarships to study Science s abroad, Engineering and Technology.

Also there was a open in NPOWER a Federal Government of Nigeria Youths Empowerment Scheme.

Where we are and why.Science, engineering and technology did it played the expected critical roles as supposed in accelerating economic growth of Nigeria.

They have failed to create the software of creative ideas and research findings, which should be translated to practical value fir economic development.

The low contribution of Science, engineering and technology to economic development is attributable to:

1. Poor linkage of research institutions to end users in the productive sectors.

2. Failure to commercialize even the modest inventions by research institutes.

3. Poor equipment and infrastructural facilities at research institutes

4. Obsolete and dilapidated science laboratories and engineering equipment in our tertiary institutions which have reduced drastically the quality of our graduates

5. Policy frequent changes

6. Little, lack of the political will to mobilise science, engineering and technology manpower in the pursuit of national economic objectives

7. Poor state of essential infrastructure

8. Failure to disseminate information on the services and the competence of research and development institutions to potential users

And

9. Not willing to embrace the frequent changes in science, engineering and new technology

Laying A Solid Foundation

The Government h critically reviewed the prevailing situation and worked out measures to reverse the poor trend. The SMEs are being linked so that they work collaboratively with research institutes. Funding is being intensified for various people-oriented projects, including R&D (Research and Development) into a prophylactic vaccine against HIV, Aids and Covid 19, the development of an anti-fungal agent and acquisition of a multipurpose gamma irradiation facility for reducing post-harvest losses in farms

Where we want to be as a country

Government wants to achieve a science, engineering and technology driven economy. The administration will seek to establish the enabling environment and machinery for promoting rapid technological development to accelerate overall socio-economic development. The intention is to make science, engineering and technology veritable instrument for improving locally produced goods and services. The objective is to promote science, engineering and technology/ market-driven production based on SMEs during the different tenures of rule.In this way Government considering these are essential part of every Government Agenda for Nigeria, modernization in the economy will be achieved easily.

Plan on how to get there

Government will streamline its operations in science, engineering and technology to focus on specific research projects targeted at providing multiple support and solutions oriented to the nation’s development priorities. Government’s approach is to increase the capacity for defining objectives, selecting appropriate technologies, adapting them to local and international need and operating and managing them in an integrated and rational programme. Government will work with all relevant stakeholders in the science, engineering and technology system to improve on the indigenous technologies, acquire and adapt foreign technologies to assist the private sector to continually improve its international competitiveness.

Specific measures and strategies include:

1. Revising the legal and administrative frameworks if incentives for science, engineering and technology

2. Implementation of the Village Science and Technology Park initiative

3. Intensification of value addition R&D efforts involving the use of locally available raw materials

4. Opening of Technology Business Incubator Centres in more states of the Federation

5. Production of solar panels for rural energy supply

6. Modernizing, expanding and privatizing existing ceramics and pottery production/ brick plans for manufacturing toilet, kitchen and other related wares

7. Giving pride of place to the upgrading of the technologies in use by SMEs

8. Improving engineering design and fabrication of industrial processing machinery through partnership between the National Association of SMEs and relevant institutions and

Facts About Nigeria Ministry of Science and Technology

The Federal Ministry of Science & Technology is a Nigerian ministry whose mission is to facilitate the development and deployment of science and technology apparatus to enhance the pace of socio-economic development of the country through appropriate technological inputs into productive activities in the nation. It is headed by a Minister appointed by the President, assisted by a Permanent Secretary, who is a career civil servant. President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR on November 11, 2015 swore in Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu as the Minister of Science and Technology with Dr.(Mrs) Amina Muhammed Bello Shamaki as the permanent secretary in the ministry.

Nigeria Engineering

Our Mandate

The Mandate of NASENI is specifically in the area of capital goods research, production and reverse engineering with respect to six broad areas.

Vision

To create an enabling knowledge-driven environment for local mass-production of standard parts, goods and services required for the Nation's Technology Advancement.

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is the only on-purpose built intervention agency of the Federal Government under the Presidency whose mandate include nurturing an appropriate and dynamic Science and Engineering infrastructure base for achieving home initiated and home sustained industrialization for Nigeria. The mandate of the Agency includes the development of relevant processes, capital goods and equipment necessary for job creation, national economic well-being and progress. The Agency took deliberate interest in key areas of science and engineering development because any nation that aspires to attain socio-economic transformation must definitely invest in them in order to engender competition.

Clear example of fast growing science sector, the Chemical Engineer CAN A CHRISTIAN DRINK PALM WINE?

So I was working in the lab with my SS3 Chemistry Students and we fermented this fresh "Palm wine" from carbohydrate sources. Ever since I tasted it I feel like bringing out song.

The topic we are handling is CARBOHYDRATE. I will run for 3 weeks and like my style of teaching, it will be practical based. They will be performing practical on the following areas:

1. Extraction and test for starch from foodstuffs.

2. Acid and Enzymatic hydrolysis of starch using mineral acids and alpha amylase respectively.

3. Fermentation of glucose to ethanol and carbon iv oxide.

4. Production of caramel from sucrose.

You can join the practical session at Odfid Technical Center (07037263653).

Welcome to Fermentation Science for High School Chemistry students.

The above named centre and more like are into more practical part of CHEMISTRY AND SCIENCE.

So as a country, change is bound to happen now and more in the future.
